Weekly Water Quality Report
Volume 6, Issue 26; Tuesday June 30th, 2009

Dear Interested Parties,

This weekly water quality report is produced by the Department of Water Resources, Office of Water Quality. The corresponding data can be downloaded on the right in Excel XP file format. This report is part of the Real Time Data and Forecasting (RTDF) project. The goal of this report is to bring real time, near real time, and forecasted water quality data to source water managers, treatment plant operators, scientists, and other stakeholders. Any questions, comments or suggestions are welcome. Please contact Joe Christen by e-mail at jchriste@water.ca.gov or by phone at (916) 376 9710. The RTDF Steering Committee provides guidance and the report will continue to evolve and provide more useful information. This report contains preliminary data and is subject to revision. All figures except the EC forecasts and San Luis Storage represent mean daily data.

Sincerely,
The RTDF Team

Summary Comments, Interpretations, and Observations:

Precipitation: There was no significant precipitation at the monitored locations.

Flow: As of June 28, 2009: The Sacramento River at Freeport mean daily flow increased to 12,853 cfs. The NOAA River Forecast Center predicts that the Sacramento River flow will continue to increase through Tuesday June 30. Increased flow in the Stanislaus River is largely responsible for the increase in flow in the San Joaquin River near Vernalis; mean daily flow increased to 1,354 cfs and is currently decreasing. Combined South interior Delta exports have decreased since last week. The H. O. Banks Pumping Plant mean daily pumping rate was 167 cfs. The C. W. Jones Pumping Plant mean daily pumping rate was at 1,663 cfs. The Barker Slough Pumping Plant mean daily pumping rate decreased slightly to 96 cfs. The Delta Total Outflow index has increased to 7,761 cfs. The Delta cross-channel gates have been open since June 16.

Salinity and Anions: The modeled salinity forecast predicts that EC at the Banks and Jones export facilities will decrease very slightly over the week. As of June 28, 2009: Mean daily EC in the Sacramento River at Hood decreased slightly to 125 µS/cm. The Barker Slough Pumping Plant mean daily EC has increased slightly to 243 µS/cm. The San Joaquin River near Vernalis mean daily EC has decreased to 389 µS/cm and is currently back on the rise in response to the decreasing Stanislaus River flow. The H. O. Banks Pumping Plant mean daily EC varied little and was 403µS/cm. Anion data: At the H. O. Banks Pumping Plant the bromide concentration was 0.15 mg/L. The bromide concentration in the San Joaquin near Vernalis was 0.17 mg/L.

Organic carbon: As of June 28, 2009: In the Sacramento River at Hood mean daily TOC (oxidation) was 1.6 mg/L. In the San Joaquin near Vernalis the mean daily TOC showed a large increase over the week that may be an artifact and not representative of the actual water quality; mean daily TOC concentration increased to 6.3 mg/L and the mean daily DOC concentration increased only very slightly to 2.3 mg/L. At the H. O. Banks Pumping Plant the mean daily TOC concentration decreased slightly to 4.5 mg/L and the mean daily DOC concentration was 3.9 mg/L. At the Jones Pumping Plant mean daily TOC concentration decreased slightly to 3.9 mg/L and the DOC concentration was 3.0 mg/L.
